At thirty years old I went back to school, to art school, attending days and driving a cab some nights.I drove late Friday night-early Saturday morning and slept late. One of my few pleasures those years was walking over to Harvard Square on a Saturday afternoon and seeing Brother Blue telling his stories. They were like something out of Finnegans Wake made up of characters and plots from Shakespeare, the Bible and things that sounded like stories from yesterday but on reflection were predictions of tomorrow. You can find some videos on youtube and some other stuff on the WWW, but you have to look for it.
Early one morning in 1979 driving highway 80 through the midwest some unknown radio station focuses in out of nowhere and I hear 912 Greens, a great story by Jack Elliot and then to top it off, a piece of personal tape of Brother Blue and then I am out of radio range, back in the midwest. I think a piece of Jean Shepard would have just topped it off.
John Waters is like Frank Zappa, both use the same tool box of techniques used by commercial (Hollywood) film or (pop) music—its how they use these techniques that makes it interesting— the seeds of their own destruction. (Click on the image to see some new posters.)
