“Keep your eyes on the prize hold on,” was a line from an old gospel song later to become a civil rights song. What is this prize? Is the quest for this prize a zero sum game that gets increasingly chaotic as individuals in their personal quest separate themselves from the binds of culture that keep everything together. Culture is like gravity—gravity keeps the universe together, but as it expands perhaps gravity loses its ability to maintain the universe as a thing and similarly, this drive for individual desires will destroy the ability of culture to maintain us as human beings. Without the processes of culture we might all be successful in our individual careers but we will not be human.
