When the Fifth Patriarch was asked why he chose Hui-neng—who could neither read nor write  and whose  only job was to sift and sort rice in the kitchen— to succeed him out of the 500 monks at the temple, he replied:

“Four hundred and ninety nine  of my disciples understood Buddhism very well, and only Hui-neng had no understanding of it whatsoever.”
