Daruma is certainly best known for meditation and this brillant painting which has both front and side views raises the expectations of the standard of quality of the book. The Cleary brothers are famous for their translations of Zen material.
Daruma brought Zen from India to China in the last part of the sixth century. The story is that he stayed at Shao-lin Temple and when he tried to teach the monks to meditate they could not concentrate and so he taught them kung-fu to give them something to do with their body while meditating.
Its also said that he gave them an example by meditating for nine years straight and this gave birth to the idea of the Daruma Doll, a figure with no arms or legs, so popular in Japan.
